If you read my last Substack post, you know I’ve been obsessed with the big-eyed pomegranate-sized head doll known as a Blythe doll. I even started a Blythestagram page where I share all of my doll adventures like sharing my latest crochet clothing creations and playing with miniatures. It’s been so fun playing with dolls again but I wanted to start a cozy series on my substack where I go more in-depth on my Blythe adventures and discuss all things Blythe-related because it’s very limited and I’m a long-form content gal, I’m a true blogger at heart!
I started my Blythestagram the week of Halloween, October 28 to be exact! I wrote an introduction post with some information about my only Blythe doll, May. She’s a Save the Animals Blythe doll. I received her in 2007-2008, it was a birthday gift from my older sister who had an Enchanted Petal Blythe doll. After I expressed interest in Blythe dolls she bought me the Save the Animals doll because I had just turned vegetarian for the animals and was in an animal-lover phase. Plus, she thought I resembled the doll1 so she thought we suited each other. haha
May eventually got a bad haircut so I bought a wig for her with the hopes of getting her a new scalp one day2 but that day never came as I ignored her because life got in the way, I was only 14-15 when I got her. However, I also kept May displayed on a bookshelf or dresser because I thought she was too precious to put away in a box so she’s always been nearby.
Fast forward to this year, I saw a friend’s Instagram post of them sharing a picture of their Blythe doll. Blythe dolls are so niche so I always get super excited when I see one pop up! This Instagram post encouraged me to give May a makeover.
I recorded myself opening up my Blythe doll for the first on my YouTube channel. It was really scary but I’m proud of the work I did even though it was minor. I had originally planned on giving May a complete makeover by sanding her face and giving her new makeup and I even considered getting her a new body! However, I’ve since decided that if I want to get into custom doll work then I’ll buy a fake Blythe via Aliexpress. After listening to La Dolly Dispatch, I’ve decided that I’m going to try to preserve as much of my original Blythe as I can. I already ruined her hair (which I so regret) so I’m going to try to let her unique features shine like her face.
That’s enough for this post! This series is called “Blythe Bites” so I don’t want these posts to become too long. In my next post, I’ll go further into crocheting clothes, Blythe photography, and making Blythe friends!

Some Blythe collectors like to get a doll that looks like them which they lovingly refer to as their mini-me which I think is super cute!
Save The Animals is an SBL mode which is one of the most difficult models to customize. Because of this, I decided to chop her hair off and buy her a new wig instead.
